Looking beyond the ward

Nursing Live to showcase the diverse work opportunities open to nursing staff at every stage of their career

A recent article in Nursing Standard looked at how clinical practice and nurse leadership is not confined to conventional healthcare settings, and highlighted that nursing offers many different career pathways. From monasteries to oil rigs, and from police stations to cruise ships, the story illustrated how nursing skills are in demand in many unusual settings. The wide range of jobs and career paths available to nursing staff is also a topic set to be discussed extensively at Nursing Live this November, and there will be lots of presentations and workshops at the event focused on the diverse and interesting work opportunities available both inside and outside the NHS.

One of these sessions is entitled Inspiring Careers in Nursing. Hosted on the main stage on Friday November 10th at 2.45pm, and chaired by Joanne Bosanquet, Chief Executive of the Foundation of Nursing Studies, this will be a panel discussion looking at different career options across the whole of the nursing sector.

Panellists will include Lucy Gillespie, National Professional Lead for Nursing at Skills for Care; Dr Crystal Oldman CBE, CEO at the Queen's Nursing Institute; Maria Buaki-Sogo, nurse, midwife and PhD student at Anglia Ruskin University; and Professor Nicola Ranger, Chief Nurse at the RCN.

Joanne Bosanquet, who is also on Nursing Live’s Advisory Board, said: “I see Nursing Live as an opportunity to showcase the impact we make every day, and establish a growing community of nurses progressing our amazing profession. I’m also looking forward to meeting lots of new colleagues and celebrating nursing’s role at the very heart of the UK’s health and care sector.”

Another Nursing Live Advisory Board member, Rohit Sagoo, who is a children's nurse and founder of British Sikh Nurses, is also a champion of nursing staff looking ‘beyond the ward’ for new and interesting job opportunities.

He said: “The best advice I've ever been given during my nursing career is don't be a bird on a perch and stay at the same level. Fly as high as you can. And always have a goal. And once you've achieved that goal, push that goal forward.”
