Exploring the issue of restrictive practice vs patients’ rights

A recent article in Nursing Standard has highlighted the complexities of restrictive practice. Headlined “When Simple Acts May Breach Patient Rights”, it explores how nurses could be unwittingly breaching patients’ human rights by imposing rules on them in pressured healthcare settings.

The article – which can be accessed by RCNi Plus subscribers here - also offers advice for nurses on the law regarding practices that limit patients’ activities, including when they may unintentionally infringe on human rights.

The issue of restrictive practice will also be one of the topics set to be discussed at Nursing Live.

James Ridley, Dementia Care Manager at the national care homes operator HC-One, will be giving a presentation entitled Restrictive practice(s): responding with a rights-based approach across the lifespan on Friday November 10th.  During the session he will look at how restrictive practice can create dilemmas for clinicians in relation to the approaches that they take, and the legality of such interventions.

It will also cover what is meant by a restrictive practice, what types of restrictive practices there are, and the potential practical and professional considerations to protect the rights of all.

James’ presentation is just one of over 100 talks, demonstrations and masterclasses being hosted at Nursing Live. To explore the full programme of expert speakers and topics visit our fully searchable event guide
