Rhian Smith
Director of nursing & healthcare, Hoop Recruitment
Rhian qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 2009 and began her career in a nursing home for younger adults with complex needs. She quickly progressed into management and, by the age of 24, was running the service. During this time, she completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health (Health Promotion), focusing on sexual health and education for individuals with physical disabilities.
In 2012, Rhian transitioned into healthcare recruitment, building a strong network of agency nurses for nursing homes and NHS Wales hospitals. She continued to work agency shifts herself, gaining broad experience—including a placement supporting the London Met Police during the NATO summit.
After welcoming her first two children, Rhian returned to hands-on care in two dementia nursing homes in South West Wales. In 2017, she was approached by Paul Lewis and Hywel Roberts to launch Hoop Nursing, the nursing division of the award-winning Hoop Recruitment.
Under Rhian’s leadership, Hoop Nursing has become the leading agency for care homes across Wales, offering both agency staffing and permanent recruitment. Despite sector deregulation, Rhian and her team maintain a strong focus on compliance and workforce quality.
Passionate about influencing positive change, Rhian volunteers with Working Options, inspiring young people to pursue careers in nursing and social care. She also serves as a board member with RCN Wales, advocating for collaboration between the Independent Sector and the NHS to improve outcomes for patients and service users.
