RCN professional lead for midwifery and women’s health

Maria Symeonaki is Professional Lead for Midwifery and Women's Health and a practising community midwife. She works across all four UK nations, advocating for nursing and midwifery professionals and helping to shape policy and practice in women's health through engagement with members, strategic partners and national stakeholders.

Trained as a midwife in Greece, Maria has worked across maternity and women’s health services in the UK, Belgium and Australia. Alongside her strategic leadership role, she continues to work clinically in community maternity services, maintaining a strong connection to women, families and frontline care.

Maria is passionate about supporting midwives, nurses and support workers to thrive, innovate and lead sustainable improvements in healthcare. Her work focuses on professional leadership, workforce development and advancing high-quality, evidence-based care for women and their families.

In the final stages of completing her MBA, Maria has strengthened her expertise in strategic leadership, organisational systems and delivering sustainable change. She combines clinical expertise, international experience and a commitment to workforce development to champion the nursing and midwifery professions and contribute to the future of women's health services.
