Kathryn Tolfree

Kathryn (Kat) Tolfree is Head of the Education Academy at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust and previous Chair of the UK Clinical Nurse Educator Network. Over the past 10 years Kat has specialised in healthcare education and workforce development, leading change at local, regional and national levels.
During her time as Chair (2022–2024), Kat significantly grew the network, improved engagement and recognition, built a strong community, and led national events, webinars and campaigns. She also contributed to policy development, research, and publications that raised the profile of nurse education as a recognised specialty.
Kat is passionate about supporting nurses into specialist educator roles and helping them build confidence, identity and belonging. She uses a coaching approach grounded in positive psychology to help others grow, lead and thrive. Her leadership style is collaborative, values-driven and focused on creating space for others to flourish.
Kat holds a PGCert in Higher Education and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She’s an experienced speaker and independent consultant, offering support in curriculum design, educator development and workforce strategy. She believes education is key to improving patient care and staff wellbeing—and that educators deserve recognition, support and opportunities to lead. Her work is shaped by personal experience as a carer and a deep commitment to patient advocacy.
