Kate is a highly experienced and qualified children’s nurse with over thirty years of expertise in the field of Babies, Children, and Young People’s (BCYP) Nursing. Her career began in 1993 as a specialist children's cancer nurse, and she has since worked across eight acute provider Trusts spanning a wide geographical area. She progressed from a Band 5 nurse to her first Band 7 role by 1998.

After several years in a clinical Band 7 position, Kate broadened her scope to encompass the full spectrum of BCYP nursing management. In 2012, she became a matron and subsequently held a number of senior nursing leadership roles. In 2021, she was appointed the national BCYP nursing lead at NHS England before returning to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2024.

As Deputy Chief Nurse, Kate deputises for the Chief Nurse and works collaboratively across several key workstreams. Her leadership includes responsibility for professional development and wellbeing support for nursing teams, as well as involvement in workforce and quality initiatives. These include ward accreditation, the Pathway to Excellence programme, the Trust’s nursing strategy, and operational optimisation and flow.

Kate is a strong advocate for professional accountability and standards, maintaining a visible leadership presence across the Trust. She also serves as one of the Deputy Chairs for the Association of Chief Children’s Nurses (ACCN), where she supports conference planning and works to promote the unique needs of BCYP nurses. She is well networked within the BCYP nursing community and remains dedicated to advancing the profession.
