Karl Emms
Lead nurse for patient safety, Birmingham Women's NHS Foundation Trust
Karl was appointed Lead Nurse for Patient Safety at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHSFT in 2015. His role entails leading patient / staff-centred reviews of clinical systems to increase their safety and jointly leading the Trust’s Human Factors Faculty; always aiming to “make it easy to do the right thing”. He has worked nationally with NHSE’s SPOT Group to develop / rollout the National Paediatric Early Warning System for England. He also works with local universities to develop new medical devices that aim to address safety gaps in clinical procedures.
Karl originally graduated as a children’s nurse in 1996, holding numerous clinical roles (hepatology, renal, general medicine and ED) and education roles across NHS Trusts / Universities. He graduated with a Masters in Healthcare Leadership in 2024.
